Great tours begin hereThis part of Turkey isn't just a summer destination. In the autumn, winter and spring the climate is much kinder and milder and the attractions that bring the August tourists are all still here. In the spring the wildflowers are beautiful and the same sites that require stamina, determination and bottled water to see in the high season can be taken in at your leisure. In the autumn the sea is still warm and, apart from a little rain, the Mediterranean climate is very welcoming. ABI travel have put together a selection of activities aimed at small groups of independent travellers with a wish to experience a little of what Turkey and the Turks have to offer. Listed below you'll find some ideas that might appeal and if you'ld like to put together an itinerary all you need to do is email Linda and John to get the ball rolling.

Out of season activities from ABI
Hiking

A day walking in the mountains of Lycia, led by an experienced local guide. Historical sights and a taste of Turkish village life as we take lunch in a village house. Optional destinations include mountain villages, and the Kekova island region.

Archaeology

The splendour of Hellenic, Roman and Byzantine Turkey is all around you in ancient Lycia. Why not see the sites in comfort and at your leisure. Specialist interest groups can easily be catered for.

Olives

A day spent visiting traditional village industries. Olive oil and soap being made, flour and sesame seed being milled. The evening meal in true Turkish style with great food, music and dancing.

Oranges and sacred flames

November marks the beginning of the orange harvest and this 2 day trip takes you from Kalkan to the marvels of Myra where we spend the morning exploring the rock tombs and ancient city, taking in the Church of Saint Nicholas. The afternoon is spent in the orange groves of Cirali prior to a sunset trip to the undying flames of Chimaera, a natural wonder that has inspired throughout the ages. The next day we get to pick some oranges and then its a walk down the beach to the ancient site of Olympos, a truly magical setting.

Fishing

For many people on this coast fishing is a way of life. We can arrange for you to spend a day or night at sea, exploring the bays and beaches with a local who knows his way around. Then cook your catch on the beach on the boat. A memorable and unusual day trip.

Cookery

A practical demonstration of the art of Turkish and Ottoman cooking. The preparation of dishes varies from region to region and our chef will talk you through selection of ingredients and cooking methods so that you can recreate these dishes at home. Of course, the evening is spent sampling the food and wine of Turkey.

Arykanda

A seldom visited archaeological site set high in the coastal mountains. We'll make our way there via Green Lake and, depending on the time of year, we may be travelling through snow capped peaks to reach the ancient city, now the home of eagles who circle high above the valley floor.

Antalya

If you're arriving or leaving via Antalya let us guide you around the old town and harbour area. Old Antalya has many secrets and it's charming network of alleyways makes for a great introduction to eating, drinking and shopping in Turkey.
