Crisis? What Crisis
That was the year and a bit that was.
- June 18, 1997 - Islamist Prime Minister Necmettin Erbakan, under army pressure, asks President Suleyman Demirel to hand power to his coalition partner Tansu Ciller.
- June 20 - Demirel angers Islamists by giving mandate to main opposition Motherland Party leader Mesut Yilmaz.
- June 30 - Yilmaz takes over as prime minister at the head of a left-right coalition united on an anti-Islamist agenda.
- July 12 - Yilmaz coalition wins vote of confidence.
- August 16 - Parliament passes a bill to curtail Islamic education, sparking nationwide anti-government demonstrations.
- August 22 - Yilmaz says he favours polls in late 1998.
- October 10 - Yilmaz says polls are likely in 2000.
- December 14 - The European Union puts Turkey's entry bid on hold Turkey says it will cut political dialogue with the bloc.
- March 20 - Leftist leader Deniz Baykal, who backed the coalition on key votes, says the government is effectively finished and the army warns Yilmaz against going soft on Islamic activism.
- April 23 - Baykal says he has agreed with Yilmaz to hold elections in March 1999.
- April 27 - Yilmaz calls on Baykal to reconsider the polls plan after widespread criticism from his coalition partners.
- June 3 - Yilmaz strikes a new deal with Baykal under which he will resign as PM at the end of 1998 so an interim government can rule until elections in April 1999.
- June 16 - Yilmaz signs the polls deal with Baykal.
- July 30 - Parliament approves April 18, 1999 as the date for early polls, not due until 2000.
- August 4 - Businessman Korkmaz Yigit's $600 million bid is the highest in a tender to buy Turkbank from the central bank.
- September 3 - Yilmaz asks Baykal to reconsider their deal.
- October 14 - The sale of Turkbank is suspended pending investigation of corruption charges.
- October 22 - Turkey says Syria has stopped aiding Kurdish rebels following Turkish threats of military force.
- November 10 - Baykal calls for Yilmaz to resign after Yigit alleges corruption in the Turkbank sale.
- November 12 - Kurdish rebel leader Abdullah Ocalan arrested in Rome, leading to ongoing row with Italy over his fate.
- November 25 - Yilmaz loses a censure vote on alleged corruption in the Turkbank sale, ending his government.
- December 2 - Demirel nominates leftist Bulent Ecevit to form a government to replace Yilmaz.
- December 21 - Ecevit abandons his search and returns the mandate to Demirel.
- December 23 - Demirel mandates Yalim Erez to form a government.
