Once you get there jump on one of these and get lost

International direct flights to Esenboga (Ankara's Airport) are a little limited, certainly in comparison with Istanbul. The most regular services are with Lufthansa, probably because there are 4 Million Turks living in Germany. A recent development is the direct Stansted Ankara daily service operated by Cypriot Turkish Airlines, their pilots like to tilt the plane a little so you can see what you're flying over. Very considerate but it takes a little getting used to.

You can get internal flights to Ankara with THY (Turk Hava Yollari) from Istanbul, Izmir, Antalya and the less popular airports with very little difficulty and at a reasonable cost (less than 50 quid one way). It's a nice way to get around if you've been on too many night buses. The airport is a fair drag out of the city and if you don't fancy shelling out for a taxi there's a regular Havas bus that will drop you at either the railway station or the bus station for a fraction of the cost.

Every regional transport hub has bus services to Ankara and the bus station, located about 5km to the South West of the city center, offers services to pretty much everywhere in Turkey.

There are regular, if a little slow, train services from Istanbul's Haydarpasha station and Izmir; if you don't mind taking 12 hours over a 6 hour journey it can be fun and there are couchettes available if you don't want to share a cabin with 5 strangers. It's probably fairly impractical to try and book anything on a train before you get to Turkey but do have a go and let us know how you get on.
