Samanpazari street traders (little ones)

Ankara's second Marks and Spencers opened this year. You'll find a wide range of shopping opportunities here and it's one of the best places to buy carpets in Turkey. The old town, huddled in the shadow of the citadel has scandalously cheap fruit and vegetables, whole arcades of gold shops and a collection of antiquey and souveniry shops that's slowing going up market in an attempt to attract anyone coming thrpugh the city for a day or two. At the other end of town there are upmarket fashion shops but there isn't really the collection of designer names you'd expect to find in a Western European capital. Clothes can be a bargain here and although the price differential for leather is decreasing you should still be able to find a deal.

To give you an idea of the Ulus end of town here are a couple of places you might like to visit.

  • Altamira - Nice little one man antique shop in the old town.

  • Kerim Sefer - Looking for serious carpets?
